The Makgadikgadi Pans stretch across thousands of square kilometers, creating an otherworldly expanse of shimmering white crust during the dry season. During the rainy season, the pans temporarily transform into shallow lakes, attracting tens of thousands of migratory birds, including flamingos and pelicans. Zebras and wildebeests also migrate through the region, creating one of Africa’s great but lesser-known wildlife spectacles. Surrounding the pans are grasslands and palm-dotted islands, which support populations of meerkats, springboks, and other desert-adapted species.
